What do you understand by Sebum? Sebum is formed by the sebaceous glands found in many areas of the body. Leaving few, many sebaceous glands opens into hair follicles. These are the main areas of acne production. Well, sebum is element of oil which is found on skin’s surface. Other ingredients of oil on skin are- lipids, environmental dirt and sweat. It’s the sebum which contributes much to one’s body odor. Sebum is odorless but the bacterial disintegration from it generates odor. Keeping skin clear from bacteria can clear body odor. Sebum reaches the hair follicles and then coats the hair. It then reaches the skin. Most people get oily hair if their hair is unwashed for some days. It happens due to sebum. Sebum’s production decreases with one’s age. Particularly, in ladies it decreases after menopause. Adult women form less sebum. Its production might experience jump at times of puberty in males. Adult acne can create problems in future. There are few common beliefs regarding sebum. Some believe that drying much sebum by blotting oils would reduce the sebum’s production. Few believe that if one uses products that are supposed to control the oil’s production then it would increase the sebum’s production. Both beliefs are wrong. Drying surplus oil would only remove the surface oils. And using oil control products would not increase the sebum’s production.
